Kayla Pitter-Aryeetey, a member of Legacy’s young people’s development group said: “I first joined Legacy’s Development Group in March 2018, not knowing what to expect or what opportunities would be available to me. Since then I have been able to go on amazing residential trips, feature on billboards around Croydon and even meet HRH The Duke of Sussex.
Being a part of Legacy has allowed me to meet fantastic people. I am so excited to see Legacy Youth Zone and the youth work team in action. I am proud to be a part of something which gives young people somewhere to go, something to do and someone to talk to.”
Barnabas Shelbourne, Chief Executive at Legacy Youth Zone said: “As a brand-new young people’s charity in Croydon we are keen to open with a first-class offer, providing the borough’s young people with somewhere safe and inspiring to spend their leisure time. Croydon is bursting with bright young people, Legacy is here to support them to discover their talents and develop their skills.” Legacy Youth Zone is being delivered in partnership with young people, OnSide Youth Zones, Croydon Council who have contributed £3.25m to the capital costs and £300,000 to the annual running costs, as well as several local businesses and philanthropists who wish to see Croydon flourish. As a charity the success of the Youth Zone is reliant on support from the entire community.
Councillor Alisa Flemming, cabinet member for children, young people and learning, said: “Croydon is home to 93,000 under-18s – that’s more young people than any other London borough – and they are at the heart of everything we do. Through our award-winning Choose Your Future campaign, we have united the community to create opportunities for young people and support them to make positive choices. We promised we would be ambitious for our young people – our investment in and commitment to Legacy is central to that and it will make an incredible difference to so many young lives. Well done to all the young people who have worked so hard with OnSide and us to make this happen – I can’t wait to see it open.”
